The Special Task Force (STF) of Madhya Pradesh Police claimed to have seized nearly 600 kg of cannabis (ganja) worth nearly Rs 1.8 crore from a secret compartment in a truck and arrested two people in the Jabalpur district of the state.

Sources said that the police had received a tip-off about the ganja being ferried in a truck from Jharkhand to MP to be supplied to various places in the state for the upcoming New Year celebrations.

An STF team was deployed at the MP-Chhattisgarh border. It spotted the suspected truck on Thursday.

The team began the pursuit of the truck, but initially it appeared empty, putting the police in doubt.

Taking advantage, the truck driver veered from the highway onto rural roads. However, a second STF vehicle kept tracking the truck, and when it was confirmed by the informer that the input was credible, the police intercepted the truck near Jabalpur, after following it for more than 150 km.

Police officials said that on checking the truck, it was found that a secret chamber had been built behind the driver’s cabin. The police found the contraband hidden in it.

The remaining body of the truck was empty, giving the impression that the truck had no freight.

According to STF SP Rajesh Singh Bhadoria, two accused were arrested. They have been identified as Ankit Vishwakarma of Sidhi and Dhananjay Patel of Satna, both in MP.

Further investigations are on in the matter.
